About this Spot
Rainbow Beach is a surf spot located in Queensland, Australia, stretching along the coast between Inskip Point and Double Island Point. The spot is an open, exposed beach break with a sandy bottom and is suitable for all levels of surfers. The northern section near Inskip Point has stronger waves and double-barred, rip-dominated breaks, while the southern end closer to town has smaller waves and single sandbars, making it better for beginners. The central and northern parts of the beach can have strong rip currents, so always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best swell direction is from the northeast, east, or southeast, with a minimum swell height of 3 feet needed for decent surf. The best wind direction is from the southwest or west. The spot works on all tides and is generally uncrowded, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is busy. Boards of all types can be used here, including beginner boards, softboards, shortboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards. The average ride length is less than 50 meters. Access to Rainbow Beach is via the A1 highway, leaving at Gympie or Maryborough and heading towards Tin Can Bay, Rainbow Beach, or Fraser Island. Once in Rainbow Beach, head to the coast and either turn left to drive down the beach or right to walk about 50 meters through greenery to reach the surf. The Rainbow Beach Surf Life Saving Club is located near the main beach area and provides safety patrols and facilities. Nearby surf spots include Inskip Point, Double Island Point, Teewah, Red Canyon, and Noosa Main Beach. Always swim between the flags and be cautious of vehicle traffic on the beach.
