About this Spot
Fraser Island, also known as K’gari, is a surf spot located in Queensland, Australia. This World Heritage-listed sand island is situated along the south-eastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region. The island is approximately 250 km north of Brisbane and is part of the Fraser Coast Region. The surf spot on Fraser Island is known for its right-hand waves, which can be surfed at all tides. The quality of the waves is considered regional classic, making it suitable for surfers of all levels. The surf here is very consistent, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. Despite the island attracting up to 500,000 visitors each year, the surf spot remains uncrowded, offering a unique experience for those who venture into the water. The island is accessible by barge from Inskip Point or Hervey Bay, and once on the island, a 4WD vehicle is necessary as there are no roads, only beach driving. The island is home to two main right-hand points, Indian Head and Waddy Point, both offering classic right-hand breaks. There are also numerous other breaks around the island. However, surfers should be aware of the presence of large sharks in the area. It’s common to see sharks from the headlands, and in the past, people would even attempt to shoot them if they got too close. Fishing is popular on the island, with big fish often caught, though sometimes bitten in half by sharks. The island’s surf spot is located about 150 miles north of the Sunshine Coast and receives a lot of swell. Nearby surf spots include North Ngala Rocks, Elliott Heads, Archies, Nielsen’s Beach, and Kelly’s Beach. When visiting Fraser Island for surfing, it’s important to check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Additionally, surfers should assess their skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match their surfing level. Respect the locals.
