Overview
About this Spot
Watergate is a surf spot located in Cornwall, United Kingdom. This beach stretches approximately 2 miles at low tide, featuring various peaks along its length. The northern end of Watergate is typically less crowded and is sheltered from northerly winds by surrounding cliffs. Surf conditions can improve significantly at low tide if the sandbanks are favorable. However, high tide is generally considered the best time to surf here, making Watergate one of the few locations in the area that offers good conditions at this time. During high tide, the beach shortens to about half a mile, but surfers can still access peaks further north, which may require a challenging paddle. The primary surf peak is located just to the right of the steps leading down to the beach and forms off some small rocks. Watergate is capable of handling large swells and tends to attract more swell than many nearby beaches. However, the paddle out can be strenuous, and the atmosphere can become competitive, especially when the beach is crowded. Many local surfers frequent this spot, particularly during evenings and weekends, contributing to a busy surf scene. Surfers can expect long, well-formed waves, making it suitable for all levels of experience. The wave direction is predominantly a-frame, and the bottom consists of sand. The average wave length is less than 50 meters. It is advisable to check the surf etiquette when surfing in crowded conditions and to assess your skill level against the difficulty of the waves before entering the water. The surf spot is regularly frequented, and the crowd can be significant at peak times. Nearby surf spots include Whipsiderry, Mawgan Porth, Porth Beach, Lusty Glaze, and Tolcarne Beach. To reach Watergate, take the coast road north from Newquay or south from Padstow; it is located approximately 4 miles from Newquay. Parking is available in designated areas near the beach. Before heading out, it is essential to check the surf forecast and report for Watergate to ensure optimal conditions. Respect the locals.
