Overview
About this Spot
Gates is a surf spot located in South Australia, Australia. This spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is characterized by a coral reef, and it can be surfed at all tides. The wave quality is considered normal, and it is suitable for intermediate surfers. The waves break regularly, with a length of less than 50 meters. The spot is typically empty, so you might find yourself with plenty of space to surf. Nearby surf spots include Mokes, Posties, Cape Northumberland, Yip Yip, and Browns Beach. Gates is situated amongst several surf spots at the point of Cape Douglass. When looking out towards the ocean, you will see a consistent right called Mokes to your left, directly in front of the wooden platform. The break to the right of Mokes is Gates, and further to your right is a big left-hander called Pebbles. On a good day, one or all of these spots could be working. If the waves are too big to paddle straight out from the car park, take the rip out in front of the wooden platform. You will see tracks leading the way. Be cautious when the waves are big, as the rips are very strong. This spot is not recommended for surfers in the early stages or those who are unfit. It’s a great spot on the right day, and you can move between breaks within a short paddling distance. Always check the surf etiquette when a spot is crowded, and remember to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
