Overview
About this Spot
1st Street Jetty is a surf spot located in Virginia, USA Northeast. The spot sits in Virginia Beach, near the north side of Rudee Inlet. The bottom is sandy, and the waves break regularly throughout the year. The spot is known for being crowded, especially during summer and surf events, and localism can be an issue, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when the lineup is busy. The wave is primarily right-hand, with occasional lefts depending on sand buildup. The spot works at all tides, but many surfers prefer low to mid tide. The best swell directions are northeast, east, and southeast, with the best wind coming from the southwest or west. The minimum swell height for decent waves is about 2 feet. The water can get very cold in winter, and the crowds thin out, leaving mostly locals in the lineup. Beginners often surf this spot, especially in the warmer months, and it’s a common place for first-timers to learn. If you’re just starting out, you’ll find plenty of other beginners in the water, but when the surf gets bigger, most less experienced surfers stay on the beach. More advanced surfers may find the crowds and frequent drop-ins frustrating, especially on good days. Boards of all types are used here, including softboards, shortboards, mid-lengths, and longboards. The ride length is usually less than 50 meters. Access is straightforward: follow signs to 1st Street in Virginia Beach, pay for parking, and the beach is right in front of you. Nearby surf spots include Virginia Beach 33rd Street, 42nd Street, Damneck Naval Base, The North End, and 81st Street. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
