Overview
About this Spot
Rodeo Beach is a surf spot located in Bay Area, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, about two miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The beach is known for its unique dark, pebbly sand composed of coarse chert grains in red and green colors. Surfing is possible year-round and at all tidal stages, with summer often providing the best conditions. However, be aware of strong currents that make swimming dangerous. The surf can be unpredictable, with waves ranging from waist-high to double overhead. Rodeo Beach is very consistent and offers rides less than 50m long. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks. It’s suitable for all levels of experience, but always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. The spot can occasionally get really good, but predicting when is challenging. It’s one of the closest spots to San Francisco for south swells, as Ocean Beach doesn’t pick them up as well. Rodeo Beach also offers a bit more wind protection than Ocean Beach. Be cautious of rips, undertow, rocks, and the presence of sharks. The crowd is usually sparse, with few surfers, but always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Nearby spots include Fort Point, Ocean Beach, Stinson Beach, Bolinas, and RCA. Amenities include free parking, restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. Dogs are allowed but must be leashed or voice-controlled. In 2007, an oil spill from the Cosco Busan caused the beach’s temporary closure. For surf forecasts, reports, maps, and webcams, check reliable surf information sources before your visit. Remember to prioritize safety and enjoy the unique surfing experience at Rodeo Beach.
