The best tide conditions for surfing are medium and high. The area is sheltered from north and northwest winds, often resulting in glassy or offshore conditions during spring and summer. However, the water temperature is notably cold, among the coldest in Northern California. Surfers should be aware that Ano Nuevo is an elephant seal breeding ground and a favorite spot for great white sharks. The presence of marine life adds an element of risk to surfing in this area. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, it’s crucial to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Waddell Creek, Greyhound Rock, Scott Creek, Davenport, and Shaks. Access to the surf spot requires paying a fee and parking in the designated lot before walking to the beach. The surfing area is relatively compact, which can lead to crowding, especially during weekends and summer months. Ano Nuevo State Park, which encompasses the surf spot, is known for its diverse plant communities and wildlife, including steelhead and coho salmon in its streams. The park also contains remnants of a prehistoric Native American village site and 19th-century structures from the Cascade Ranch. The coastal geographic center of California is located at the northern end of this park. Historically, the area was inhabited by the Quiroste Ohlone people before Spanish exploration in the early 17th century. The point was named by Spanish explorer Sebastian Vizcaino in 1603. Today, Ano Nuevo offers a unique surfing experience combined with rich natural and cultural history.
