About this Spot

Cable Beach is a surf spot located in North West Australia, Australia, specifically in the suburb of Broome. This 22 km stretch of white sand beach lies on the eastern Indian Ocean. The beach is named after the telegraph cable laid between Broome and Java in 1889. The surf spot features a mix of sand and rock bottoms, with waves that can be both left and right. The best surfing conditions occur during cyclone or storm swells, which typically provide 2-3 weeks of solid surf each year. During the dry season, small, clean waves of 1-1.5 ft can be found, making it ideal for longboards, although shortboards, mals, and bodyboards are also used when the surf is up. The beach experiences high temperatures and humidity from December to February, which is also the best time for waves. Surfers should be cautious of box jellyfish and Irukandji jellyfish during this period. The tidal range in this region is significant, reaching up to ten meters. While the spot can be crowded, exploring up the beach can offer more solitude. Cable Beach is accessible by car, and four-wheel drive vehicles are permitted north of the rocks. Surfers should be aware of the fast tides, which have led to some vehicles being lost each year. The beach also hosts one of Australia’s most famous nudist beaches. For those interested in wildlife, Gantheaume Point at the southern end of the beach is a good spot for observing dolphins and migrating whales. Before heading out, it’s important to check the surf forecast, report, and map to ensure conditions match your skill level. Respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Remember to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
