Overview
About this Spot
Teniente is a surf spot located in Central, Chile, in the Coquimbo region, about halfway between Los Vilos and La Serena. To get there, exit the highway at Punta Talca, head towards the coast, and then drive south for about 30 minutes until you reach the bluff overlooking the wave. The area is remote, so bring all your supplies and plan to camp if you want to stay overnight. The spot is accessible by car, and you can park near the bluff and walk down to the beach. The bottom is coral reef, and the spot works best at medium and high tide. The surf here is very consistent, with waves almost always present, and the length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best conditions are during the winter months, especially in June, July, and August, when the surf can get big and the water is cold. The ideal swell comes from the southwest, and the best wind is from the east-southeast. The waves can be hollow and fast, with some good tubes when the tide and swell line up. There are rips and undertow, and rocks are present, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The area is usually empty, and you might surf alone, but if the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. There have been reports of sharks in the area, so stay alert. The nearest surf spot is Chigualoco. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check online resources before heading out. This is one of the last frontiers for surfing in Chile, so be prepared and enjoy the adventure.
