Overview
About this Spot
La Chilena is a surf spot located in Central, Chile, in the town of Algarrobo. The spot is found behind the rocks near the yachting beach, known locally as playa el yating. To reach the break, you need to go to the wooden pier and paddle for about 10 minutes, passing El Cuesco. The surf spot provides right waves. The bottom is a mix of sand and rocks, and there are sea urchins in the area, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The wave at La Chilena is steep at takeoff and offers a good tube, making it mostly a bodyboarders wave. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The spot works best at medium and high tide, and it only breaks sometimes, so always check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The spot is considered a regional classic, but it is not very well known and is often empty. However, when the surf is good, it can get crowded, so respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. There are strong rips and undertow, and the rocks can be dangerous if you fall, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The spot is considered hard and is best for intermediate surfers. The local vibe is usually laid-back, but the lineup can get competitive during peak swells. Nearby surf spots include El Mejoral, Las Tinajas, La Peña, El Quisco Point, and Ahogados. There is no webcam or live surf map available for La Chilena, so checking the latest surf report and forecast is important before planning your session.
