About this Spot
Slaughterhouse is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated on the northwest coast of Maui, just north of Kapalua and south of Honolua Bay. The beach is also known as Mokule’ia Bay, which means ‘district of abundance’ in Hawaiian, reflecting the area’s rich marine life. Slaughterhouse is part of the Honolua-Mokule’ia Bay Marine Life Conservation District. The spot got its name from a cattle slaughterhouse that used to be nearby, where leftovers were dumped into the bay for sharks. The beach features a sandy shoreline with rocks, framed by cliffs and lush vegetation. Slaughterhouse can be accessed via a steep staircase from a small parking area along Highway 30. The spot breaks on all tides and is considered a regional classic. It’s suitable for all levels of experience, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Slaughterhouse sometimes breaks, with wave lengths less than 50m. The crowd is usually few surfers, but it’s always important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. The spot can have rips and undertow, so be cautious. When big, Slaughterhouse can be very heavy and offer massive barrels. It’s often less crowded than nearby Honolua Bay and is typically a bit smaller in size. The spot can break far out past the rock sticking out in the middle, to both the left and right. Nearby spots include Honolua Bay, DT Flemming, Ironwood Beach, Windmills, and Little Makaha. To get there from Lahaina, drive north past Napili and Kapalua. Look for a cliff with a green fence just past JT Flemming beach. There are no public amenities like restrooms or lifeguards, so come prepared with essentials. Remember to check the surf forecast and report before your visit. While there are stories of sharks, they’re not commonly seen. Always prioritize safety and respect for the environment when surfing at Slaughterhouse.
