About this Spot

Mushrooms is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated near Pohaku Park S-turns on Maui’s Upper West Side. The surf break is found in front of the first condo complex directly north of Pohaku Beach Park. Mushrooms features a coral reef bottom and works best during low and medium tides. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and sometimes breaks, offering rides between 50 to 150 meters long. Mushrooms can handle surf conditions from two to twelve feet, making it versatile for different wave sizes. The best time to surf here is during winter months, particularly January. Ideal wind direction is from the east-southeast, and the spot works best with northwest swells. Be aware of potential hazards such as rocks and sharks in the area. The crowd at Mushrooms is generally mellow, with few surfers in the lineup. A busy day might see around 15 people in the water. Weekday evenings often offer less crowded conditions. Nearby surf spots include Napili Bay, Little Makaha, Ironwood Beach, DT Flemming, and Ka’anapali. When surfing Mushrooms, it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. To access the spot, drive along the lower road in Kahana and park at Pohaku Beach Park or one of the condo complexes. Be cautious when paddling out, as it gets shallow quickly in the impact zone. The spot gets its name from the mushroom-shaped reef. While you can go left, the ride is short, and taking one section too many might result in damaging your board on the reef. Watch out for stand-up paddleboarders (SUPs), as their presence has been increasing in the area north of Lahaina. Remember to always check the surf forecast and report before heading out to Mushrooms for the most up-to-date conditions.
