Overview
About this Spot
Jaws is a surf spot located in Maui, Hawaii, also known as Pe’ahi. This renowned big wave surfing destination is situated on the north shore of Maui, approximately three miles east of Pāʻia. The surf spot provides right and left waves. Jaws is famous for producing some of the largest waves in the Pacific Ocean, with heights ranging from 30 to 80 feet. The break is characterized by a submerged coral reef that creates powerful barreling waves, making it a challenging spot for surfers. Jaws is suitable for pros only and offers epic wave quality with a wave length of 300-500 meters. The spot works on all tides and has a regular frequency. The best conditions for surfing at Jaws occur between early November and late March, when northern swells and southeasterly winds are prevalent. Access to the surf break is limited, and the nearest wave buoy is located 15 miles off Haiku-Pauwela. For spectators, the Pe’ahi Lookout offers a vantage point above the break, though reaching it requires navigating a 1.5-mile dirt road that can be treacherous, especially after rainfall. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, and sharks. The spot is known for its extreme conditions, with swells often holding up to 27 feet and potentially reaching 50 feet or more on good days. Falling off can be catastrophic, so extreme caution is necessary. Tow-in surfing or windsurfing are common methods used to tackle these massive waves. The atmosphere at Jaws is intense, with the sound of crashing waves creating a powerful roar. Nearby spots include Turtle Bay, Hookipa, Honomanu Bay, Paia Bay, and Baldwin Beach. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. The spot is usually uncrowded, but it’s always important to be mindful of other surfers in the water. Jaws has been surfed by various water sports enthusiasts, including surfers, windsurfers, kitesurfers, bodyboarders, and stand-up paddleboarders, solidifying its status as a premier big-wave surfing destination.
