About this Spot

Polihale State Park is a surf spot located in Kauai, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated at the western end of Kauai, featuring an expansive white sand beach and proximity to the Na Pali Coast. The park is accessible via a rugged dirt road, which can be challenging for non-4WD vehicles. Polihale offers a variety of beachbreak setups suitable for surfers of all levels. The waves can range from chest-high to double overhead and can hold even larger. The bottom is mostly sand with some reef sections. Ideal conditions include calm or offshore easterly trade winds, which prevail most of the year. Low to medium tides are preferred. Surfers should be aware of strong rip currents and powerful undertow. Swimming is safe only at Queen’s Pond, located toward the southern end of the park. The spot is known for its strong currents, so check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. The park offers breathtaking sunsets and clear night skies. Amenities include restrooms, showers, and picnic areas. Camping is permitted by permit only. Polihale State Park is the most western publicly accessible area in Hawaii. The beach is several miles long, with sand dunes reaching heights of nearly 100 feet. Driving on the beach is no longer permitted. The park is located north of the Pacific Missile Range Facility and Barking Sands Beach, flanked to the north by the Na Pali Coast mountain ridges. It’s the terminus for Kauai’s road network on the western side of the island. Visitors should bring additional water, food, and supplies as nothing is available for purchase in the park. There’s no medical facility or lifeguard available. The sun can be extremely intense, especially during the Hawaiian summer (March to October).
