Overview
About this Spot
Puaena Point is a surf spot located in Oahu North Shore, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated near Haleiwa Town and is known for its coral reef bottom. Puaena Point sometimes breaks, offering waves with a length of 50 to 150 meters. The spot is suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to advanced surfers. However, it can get crowded, especially on weekends and when other North Shore spots are big. Surfers should always check the surf forecast and report before paddling out. The spot has three main surfing areas: the far outside left, the middle section, and the inside area, which is popular for beginners and surf schools. When the swell is big enough (10-foot faces or larger), experienced surfers can ride the outside section, known as Incinerators. Be cautious of the ‘Cheese Grater’ rock when surfing this area. Puaena Point is protected by a natural reef, creating relatively calm conditions suitable for learning. During summer, the ocean is generally calm, while from October to early May, the waves become more suitable for surfing. The ideal swell direction is from northwest to north-northeast, with light to moderate east to south winds. Wave heights can range from overhead to triple overhead-plus during significant swells. Always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rocks, and occasional pollution. Puaena Point Beach Park offers amenities like restrooms, showers, and picnic tables. The area is known for its abundant sea turtles, which can often be seen while swimming or snorkeling. Remember to stay on the beach and avoid venturing inland, as the backshore is private property. Parking is available, and the beach is within walking distance of Haleiwa Town, where you can find local shops and eateries. Always check the surf map and webcam (if available) for current conditions before your visit.
