About this Spot

Lanikai Reef is a surf spot located in Oahu East Side, Hawaii. The spot provides both left and right waves. Lanikai Reef is situated near the renowned Lanikai Beach, known for its serene waters and picturesque surroundings. The beach is shielded by a coral reef, which results in calm conditions. Lanikai Reef sometimes breaks, offering waves with a length of 50 – 150 m. The bottom is coral reef, and the spot is suitable for surfers of all levels. Typically, there are few surfers in the lineup. Be prepared for a long paddle out, and consider using a boat for easier access. On big North or North East swells, the spot can get solid wrap, and with rare light and variable winds, conditions can be excellent. There are nice breaks all along the stretch of outer reef. A fun right can be found near the middle, offering long rides but requiring extensive paddling due to the absence of a channel. Near the two islands, there’s an enjoyable left with a channel. The spot is generally relaxed, with surfers spread out. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out. When conditions align perfectly, you can have a great session. To access the spot, drive into Lanikai and find a beach access point. Nearby surf spots include Popoia Island, Kalama, Shorebreaks, Dune Circle, and Bellows. It’s crucial to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot gets crowded. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Be aware that Lanikai Beach lacks facilities such as restrooms, showers, and lifeguards. Parking can be challenging due to the residential nature of the area, so arrive early and be mindful of parking restrictions. While Lanikai Beach itself is not ideal for surfing, Lanikai Reef offers opportunities for those seeking waves in this picturesque location. Remember to check the surf map and webcam (if available) for current conditions. The area is known for its natural beauty, including the nearby Nā Mokulua islands, which provide a stunning backdrop for surfers and photographers alike.
