Overview
About this Spot
Salsa Brava is a surf spot located in Caribbean, Costa Rica, specifically in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The spot is known for its powerful and hollow waves that break over a shallow coral reef. The spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is sharp and rocky, so it’s important to be careful to avoid injuries. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters. Salsa Brava works on all tides, but the best surf conditions are usually found during the dry season from November to April, when the swell is most consistent and comes from the northeast, with ideal winds from the south. The spot is crowded, especially when the surf forecast and report show good conditions, and the local surf community is known to be protective of the spot. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette before paddling out. Access to the lineup is through a narrow channel in the reef, which can be tricky, so it’s a good idea to watch how the locals do it before heading out. There are strong rips and undertow, and the reef can be dangerous if you get caught inside. The area used to be more untouched, but now it’s busier and there’s more risk of getting hurt if you’re not careful. The spot is recommended for experienced surfers and pros only. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Salsa Brava is located east of Limon, past Cahuita, on the east side of Puerto Viejo town. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended for access. Nearby surf spots include Playa Cocles, Black Beach, Punta Uva, Playa Grande, and Manzanillo. For more details, check the latest surf map, webcam, and forecast before heading out.
