About this Spot

Sunset Reef is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, in the Mal Pais area near Santa Teresa. The spot is known for its deep-water, thick, hollow left-hand reef break, with waves that resemble a smaller version of Teahupo’o or Cloudbreak. The bottom is coral reef, and the wave quality is considered world-class, but it only breaks sometimes, usually during the dry season from November to April when the surf forecast and report show consistent swells. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is mainly for experienced or pro surfers due to the heavy and challenging conditions. To get to Sunset Reef, head south from Playa Carmen toward Mal Pais until you see the fishermen and their boats, park in that area, and follow the trail on the other side of the fishermen’s area to the point. There is a channel on the left to paddle out to the waves. The spot is less crowded because of its remote location and the need for a vehicle to access it, so you can often surf with few other surfers around. Nearby surf spots include Mar Azul, Playa Carmen, Santa Teresa, Playa los Cedros, and Playa Coyote. The best tides for surfing here are low and medium. Always check the surf map, forecast, and report before heading out, and use a webcam if available to see the current conditions. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. The reef break is powerful and can be heavy, so make sure you are comfortable with these types of waves before entering the water.
