About this Spot

Marbella is a surf spot located in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, about 12 kilometers south of Junquillal along National Road 160 between Junquillal and Playa Ostional. The spot is known for its sand and rock bottom, with waves that are fast and powerful, and the length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Marbella works best at medium and high tides, and the most consistent surf is during the dry season from December to April when offshore winds are common. The best swell direction is from the southwest, and the best wind comes from the east-northeast. The spot is considered a regional classic and is mainly for experienced surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Access to Marbella is via an unpaved coastal road from Junquillal toward Ostional, and the road is generally in good condition for cars. To reach the surf, you need to paddle for more than 20 minutes or use a boat. The area is remote, with no surf shops, so bring your own repair kit and spare leash. There is only one restaurant on the beach where you can rent boards. The spot is usually empty, but when it gets crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Hazards include strong rips, undertow, and rocks in the water, so be careful. There have also been reports of shark sightings, so stay aware of local conditions.
