Overview
About this Spot
Cortez Beach is a surf spot located in Gulf of Mexico, Florida. The spot provides both left and right waves. This surf spot is situated on a narrow stretch of white sand on the southwest side of Anna Maria Island. The beach has a sand bottom and works best on medium and high tides. Cortez Beach is suitable for intermediate surfers and offers regular waves that are less than 50m in length. The spot is known for its ‘Old Florida’ charm and natural setting, with tall trees, native grasses, and sand dunes. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, and man-made dangers like buoys. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The area is known for shark presence, so stay alert. Localism can be an issue, so respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot gets crowded. Cortez Beach is part of the Twin Piers surf spot, located between the north and central piers. During hurricane swells, waves can reach four to six feet, producing fast, hollow barrels. The spot is accessible by heading west towards Anna Maria Island, then taking a left off one of the two bridges, and heading toward the end of the island. Parking is available along Gulf Drive South. The beach is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Wildlife enthusiasts might spot dolphins, manatees, and various fish species in the Gulf waters. Historically, the area was inhabited by Native American tribes before becoming a fishing village in the 1880s. Today, Cortez Beach offers a less commercialized beach experience compared to some neighboring areas, making it a regional classic for surfing. Remember to check the surf forecast and report before your visit.
