About this Spot

Zancudo Beach is a surf spot located in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on the Golfo Dulce, about eight miles south of Golfito and close to the Osa Peninsula. The spot is known for its long stretch of grey sand backed by jungle and mangrove forests along the Coto Colorado River. The surf here is made up of several beach breaks, with one of the best peaks found in front of Oasis on the Beach Hotel and nearby areas. The spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is sandy, and you can surf at all tides. The waves are generally small and soft, making it a place where surfers of all levels can find something to ride. The length of the ride is usually between 150 and 300 meters. Zancudo Beach is a quiet and undeveloped area, with a small village, a few grocery stores, and basic, inexpensive lodging and food options. The town is known for its relaxed vibe and is less crowded than other nearby surf spots like Pavones, Pan Dulce, Backwash, Matapalo, and Rio Sierpe. Access to Zancudo Beach is possible by a 25-minute boat taxi from Golfito or by a 45-minute to one-hour drive in a 4×4 vehicle from Golfito. The surf is very consistent, and the best conditions are usually with a southwest swell and offshore winds from the northeast. There are no webcams or live surf reports directly on the beach, so it’s a good idea to check the surf forecast and map before heading out. When the spot gets crowded, respect the locals and always follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Zancudo Beach is a good option for those looking for a quiet surf spot with consistent waves in Costa Rica.
