Pontal

Pontal is a surf spot located in Bahia, Brazil, on the north side of the Rio de Contas. To reach the spot, you need to cross the river by ferry, canoe, or paddle from the north end of Itacaré, then follow a dirt road to the beach. The area features about 10 miles of beaches lined with palm trees, and the coastline is part of the Maraú Peninsula, which is known for its preserved nature, mangroves, rivers, and wild landscapes. Pontal Beach has a sandy bottom and works best at low and medium tides. The surf here is very consistent, with waves breaking over shallow sandbanks. The outer sandbars produce larger, slower-breaking waves, while the inside peaks offer faster, hollow barrels. The spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Swells and winds from the south, especially during the Brazilian winter from May to September, create good surf conditions. The spot is suitable for all levels, but strong cross currents, heavy shore breaks, and the lack of easy entry channels can make getting in and out of the water challenging, especially for beginners. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and follow the surf etiquette. On the river side of Pontal, the calm waters are good for stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). Nearby surf spots include Boca da Barra, Praia da Resende, Tiririca, Prainha, and Jeribucaçu.
