Overview
About this Spot
Backdoor is a surf spot located in Bahia, Brazil, in the village of Olivença, about 18 km south of Ilhéus city. The spot features a sand and rock bottom and is considered a regional classic for surfing. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters and the spot sometimes breaks, offering good conditions mainly for intermediate surfers. The beach is small, with large rocks along the edges, golden sand, and coconut trees. Access to Backdoor is via Praia da Empa, which has well-maintained terrain, making it easy to reach the spot by foot or with a surfboard. Paddle out from Praia da Empa and navigate around the point to reach the break. The surf spot provides right waves. The best time for surfing at Backdoor is between May and September, when south and southeast swells bring long, hollow waves that can reach up to three meters. The wave starts at Arrisca Tudo, drops in front of the rocks, then moves to Backdoor where it forms a tube and opens up for maneuvers, finishing at the beach break of Prainha. The area lacks extensive infrastructure, so plan ahead. The presence of rocks and strong waves means swimming can be hazardous. Backdoor is best suited for experienced surfers, but intermediate surfers can try it when the swell is below one meter. The reef can be shallow, so always be aware of your surroundings and take safety precautions. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Sirihyba, Itacarezinho, Engenhoca, Jeribucaçu, and Prainha.
