Overview
About this Spot
Surf Beach is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. This secluded beach is situated at the end of Highway 246. The spot provides both left and right waves. Surf Beach has a sandy bottom and can be surfed at all tides. It’s known for its consistent swell and rarely goes completely flat. The optimal swell direction is from the Northwest, but it also works with South and North swells. Waves around 2 feet (0.6 meters) are ideal for surfing here. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and sometimes breaks, offering rides between 50 to 150 meters long. Surf Beach is usually uncrowded, which can be appealing for those seeking a quieter surf session. However, it’s important to check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Be aware of potential hazards such as strong rips, undertows, and the presence of sharks. Good paddling skills are necessary as there’s sometimes a trench to cross. Surf Beach is not recommended for beginners due to its challenging conditions. It’s considered a good summer and fall surf spot, with August, September, and October typically offering the best conditions. To access the spot, drive west on W. Ocean Ave. out of Lompoc, pass NASA buildings and two Vandenberg Air Force Base gates, until you reach the Amtrack train station where you can park. The beach is just across the tracks. Note that access has been restricted by the U.S. Air Force since 2002, and the area is off-limits from March 1 to September 30 to protect endangered snowy plover dune birds. During this period, stay within the designated beach area to avoid fines. Always respect local regulations and other surfers, and familiarize yourself with surf etiquette. Remember to check the latest surf forecast and report before your visit. While there’s no mention of a surf webcam, it’s worth checking if one becomes available for real-time conditions.
