Overview
About this Spot
A-Beach Morro Bay is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated north of Morro Bay, at the intersection of Yerba Buena Street and Pacific Coast Highway. The beach break offers waves ranging from waist-high to overhead, with a sand and rock bottom. A-Beach can be surfed year-round, but fall and winter months typically provide more consistent and powerful waves. The spot is suitable for all levels of surfers, but it’s recommended to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your ability. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, and sharks. Parking is available along the beach near residential houses. The spot is known for its A-frames that break during winter, which is why locals nicknamed it A-Beach. On the right day during fall, surfers can experience beautiful sunsets and wave faces ranging from 5-10 feet with a 13-19 second period. Both longboards and shortboards are used at this spot, depending on the conditions. Longboards are recommended for summer surfing, while either board type works well in fall and winter. Spring conditions are often too blown out for surfing. A-Beach is considered a regional classic and is usually less crowded compared to other nearby spots. Nearby surf spots include The Pit Morro Bay, Widdows, Cayucos, Mouse Rock, and Sandspit. When the spot is crowded, it’s important to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. For those interested in the area’s history, Morro Bay was founded in 1870 as a port for exporting dairy and ranch products. The distinctive Morro Rock, a 576-foot high volcanic plug, marks the entrance to Morro Bay harbor. Surfers visiting A-Beach can check surf forecasts, reports, and maps to plan their sessions and make the most of this Central Coast surf spot.
