Wave heights typically range from knee-high to overhead. The best conditions for surfing occur during autumn and winter, particularly from September to March. The local surfing community is known for its welcoming attitude. Access to the pier is open to the public year-round, with a nominal environmental fee. The pier has been modified to provide access to the Gulf shoreline. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as sharks, jellyfish, and rip currents. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The spot has two main breaks: one within 100 yards of the pier, and another on the sandbar about 75 feet out. To reach the spot from Mobile, take I-10W toward Pascagoula, exit at 17-A, and follow AL-193S to Dauphin Island. The break is on the far east side of the island. A 4×4 vehicle may be useful.
