Overview
About this Spot
Port San Luis is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides right and left waves. Port San Luis, also known as Sand Spit, features a sandy bottom and is known for its long, hollow, and powerful rides. The spot rarely breaks, typically only on the largest swells of the year. Ideal conditions include south to southeast swells ranging from chest to head high, with north, northwest, or west winds. The spot works best during low to mid tides, with a rising tide being most favorable. Access is available by driving to the Port San Luis Boat Yard parking lot, with a short walk to the spot. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rocks, man-made structures like buoys, pollution, and the presence of sharks. The spot is known for its low crowds, with few surfers present on both weekdays and weekends. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before visiting. Port San Luis is particularly challenging and only breaks on the biggest swells of the year, with double overhead SSE hurricane swells potentially making head-high waves, and 20-foot west swells possibly producing chest-high waves. The more south or east in the swell direction, the better, with 180-160 degrees being prime. Before the breakwall was constructed, the point at nearby Avila Beach was a decent surf spot, but the breakwall’s installation affected sand accumulation. Nearby spots include Sewers, Pismo Beach, Oceano, Hippo Rock, and Left Spot. Remember to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Always assess your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. A surf map or webcam can be helpful for checking conditions. The spot’s rarity and challenging nature make it a unique destination for experienced surfers seeking powerful, tubular waves when conditions align.
