About this Spot

San Simeon Point is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides right left waves. It’s known for its point breaks that face southeast to east-southeast. This orientation allows for offshore conditions with winds from northeast to northwest. Westerly winds create a side-offshore effect, potentially enhancing wave quality. The point features a reef-covered top, offering waves during large northwest and west swells. A cove wave forms at the top of the point during significant south-southeast swells, with waves starting at 5-6 feet and holding up to 10 feet. The optimal tide for surfing is low or mid-tide as it rises. San Simeon Point has a sand bottom and is suitable for intermediate surfers. The spot rarely breaks and when it does, it offers waves with a length of 50-150 meters. The crowd is typically empty, making it a potentially peaceful surf experience. Nearby spots include Boners, Ponytails, Moonstone, Mouse Rock, and Cayucos. When the conditions align, San Simeon Point can offer epic quality waves. Access to the spot requires a hike along a seaside trail, starting from the W.R. Hearst Memorial Beach parking lot. Surfers walk about a quarter-mile along the beach to find a dirt trail that leads to the point after approximately three-quarters of a mile. Be aware of rocks in the area and always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. The area is home to a resident elephant seal rookery, so be cautious and respectful of local wildlife. San Simeon is an unincorporated community on the Pacific coast of San Luis Obispo County, about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The area is known for Hearst Castle, a hilltop mansion built for William Randolph Hearst that is now a tourist attraction. The spot’s unique location and characteristics make it an interesting destination for surf enthusiasts looking for a less crowded experience.
