Overview
About this Spot
Andrew Molera Beach is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s situated within Andrew Molera State Park, a 4,800-acre undeveloped area on the Big Sur coast. The beach features a mix of sand and rocks, and works best during low and medium tides. It’s suitable for surfers of all levels and is sometimes described as a regional classic. The waves can range from 50 to 150 meters in length. The spot is known for its consistency and is considered the most reliable surfing area in Big Sur. Surfers should be aware of potential hazards such as rips, undertow, rocks, and the presence of sharks, especially during spring migration. The beach is often uncrowded, offering a more secluded surfing experience. To access the surf, park at the campground and walk to the beach. A 4×4 vehicle may be useful. Nearby surf spots include Fullers, Garrapata, Carmel, Ghost Tree, and The Wharf. The park offers various activities besides surfing, including hiking, fishing, and beachcombing. There’s a primitive walk-in trail camp popular with hikers and bikers. The park features the historic Cooper Cabin, built in 1861 or 1862, which is the oldest structure in Big Sur. A ranch foreman’s house has been converted into a museum, displaying local history and art. The Ventana Wildlife Society has established a Discovery Center within the park, offering exhibits on local wildlife. Remember to check the surf forecast and report before your visit, and always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Assess your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. The park’s location, about 20 miles south of Carmel-by-the-Sea on State Route 1, offers a unique surfing experience combined with the natural beauty of the Big Sur coastline.
