Overview
About this Spot
Sunset Beach is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, on the lower West Coast near the suburb of Sunset Beach and close to Milnerton. The spot features a long sandy shoreline with scattered beachbreaks and a sand bottom. The surf here is very consistent, with the best conditions often found during medium and high tides. Swells are most reliable when a solid 8′ ocean groundswell rolls in, producing shifty 4-5′ peaks and sometimes a long walling right. The spot provides both left and right waves. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Sunset Beach is generally empty, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. The area is exposed to strong winds, making it popular for kitesurfing, especially from November to March, but surfers will find the best conditions in winter with offshore winds from the east-southeast and clean groundswells from the southwest. The beach is about 2.8 kilometers long, stretching from Milnerton Beach (Woodbridge Island) north to Dolphin Beach. There are five small parking areas between the houses, with some walkways to the beach, though some may be damaged. The spot is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Rocks are present in the area, so be aware of potential hazards. Strong rip currents can occur, so check the surf report, forecast, and map before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Milnerton, Selis, Lagoon Mouth, Railways, and Blaauwberg. For real-time conditions, look for a webcam if available. Always check the difficulty of the spot and respect the local surf community.
