Praia Formosa is a surf spot located in Eastern Azores, on Santa Maria Island in the parish of Almagreira, within the municipality of Vila do Porto. The beach is about one kilometer long and features light-colored sand with limestone particles. The spot has both sand and rock bottoms, with waves breaking over beach and reef sections. The beach zone is good for beginners and learners, while the reef sections are better suited for surfers with more experience. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions happen when south-southeast groundswells meet north-northeast offshore winds, usually in summer. The minimum swell height for the spot is about 2 feet. The most consistent surf is found with swells from the southeast, south, or southwest, and winds from the north or northeast. Wave quality is average, with mellow beach peaks and occasional steeper reef sections. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is not crowded, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets busy. Facilities at Praia Formosa include parking, toilets, showers, a campsite, and nearby restaurants. There are lifeguard services and access for people with mobility difficulties. The area is family-friendly, but surfers should be careful of rocks and rips. You can get to the spot by car, and there is parking available. Boards suitable for this spot include beginner boards, softboards, shortboards, mid and retro boards, and longboards. The spot is close to Anjos.
