About this Spot

Pangandaran is a surf spot located in Java, Indonesia. The spot provides left waves. It’s situated on the southern coast of Java, featuring a crescent-shaped beach that stretches over five miles. Pangandaran offers numerous beach break peaks suitable for surfers of varying skill levels. The central part of the beach tends to have larger waves, while the eastern section near the nature reserve has smaller, more manageable waves ideal for beginners. The area receives consistent swells from the south and southwest, with the most reliable surf conditions occurring between April and September. Optimal surfing conditions are typically found during mid to high tides, with east or glassy winds enhancing wave quality. The sandy bottom and clean water contribute to a favorable surfing environment. Pangandaran’s surf scene is welcoming, with a moderate crowd level. The spot features several breaks, including reef breaks in the national park area such as Batu Lajar, Batu Mandi, and White Sandy Beach. There are also sandbar breaks formed by shifting rips, with wave size increasing as you move away from the bay. The jetty area near the small airport offers the biggest waves. Pangandaran is known for its Javanese hospitality, making it a good spot for beginners with locals often offering surf lessons. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before visiting. When the spot is crowded, remember to respect the locals and follow proper surf etiquette. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Pangandaran is slowly recovering from a tsunami that occurred in 2006, but a warning center is now in place. The area can be reached by bus from Jakarta or by train and bus from Yogyakarta. Pangandaran is not only known for its surf but also for its unique black and white sand beach and the nearby Pangandaran National Park. The town hosts an International Kite Festival annually since 1985. A nearby airport, Cijulang Nusawiru Airport, provides domestic service to Jakarta, making the spot more accessible for surfers.
