Overview
About this Spot
Haakgat Point is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, near Melkbosstrand and about 3 kilometers from Big Bay along Otto du Plessis Drive. The spot features a mix of coral reef and sand bottom, with a sectiony left point and beach breaks. The break sits about 30 meters out and runs parallel to the beach, with a line of rocks ending at Haakgat. The spot is exposed and can be inconsistent, depending on the sandbank at the beach break and the shallow reef section at the left point. The waves are best at high tide, and there are a-frame peaks at the back that go right across the rocks. The spot provides left waves. The surf here can hold up to 2.5 meters, and the water temperature ranges from 10-15°C in summer to 13-17°C in winter, so a long wetsuit is needed all year. The wind is usually side-shore, with southeasterly winds most common from October to March. Access is via Otto du Plessis Drive, with a small parking area nearby, but parking can be limited during busy times. The area is known for strong rips, undertow, and a deep shore break, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The spot is more suitable for intermediate surfers due to the currents and rocks. When the point is not working, you can check the beach or other nearby spots like Crayfish Reef, 3de Steen, Big Bay, Little Bay, and Blaauwberg. The length of the ride is between 50 and 150 meters, and the crowd is usually light, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded.
