About this Spot

Atlantic Beach is a surf spot located in North Carolina, USA Southeast. The spot provides both left and right waves. It’s a beach break with a sandy bottom, suitable for all experience levels. The waves at Atlantic Beach can be inconsistent, sometimes breaking and offering rides less than 50m long. Surfing is possible during all tides. The spot can get crowded, so it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Atlantic Beach experiences both windswells and groundswells, with the most favorable waves coming from the south-southeast. Offshore winds from the north can improve wave quality. The best time to surf is during autumn, particularly September, when clean, surfable waves are more frequent. Water temperatures are relatively cool, averaging around 14.7°C, so a spring wetsuit with optional neoprene boots is recommended. For beginners, The Circle in the heart of Atlantic Beach offers mellow waves, but can be crowded with swimmers. More experienced surfers might prefer Fort Macon State Park for its powerful and hollow breaks near the rock jetties and shifting sandbars. Be aware of local regulations, such as maintaining a safe distance from piers. To reach Atlantic Beach from Raleigh, take Highway 70 to the coast, ending in Morehead. Cross the Morehead/Atlantic Beach Bridge to AB and choose your spot. Atlantic Beach is part of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast and is located on Bogue Banks, a barrier island. The town is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Bogue Sound to the north. Nearby surf spots include Shackleford Banks, Cape Lookout, Emerald Isle, Onslow Beach, and Surf City Pier. The area has a rich history, with the idea of Atlantic Beach first envisioned in the 1870s, though construction didn’t begin until 1887. A bridge connecting Atlantic Beach to Morehead City was built in 1928. For the latest surf forecast, report, and webcam information, be sure to check online resources before your visit.
