Koggala Lefts

Koggala Lefts is a surf spot located in Southwest, Sri Lanka, near the town of Koggala. The spot features a coral reef bottom with sharp rocks and urchins, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The wave is a left-hand reef break that works at all tides and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is usually empty, and the atmosphere in the water is relaxed, but always respect the locals, especially if the spot gets crowded, and check the surf etiquette before paddling out. Access to the spot is possible through the Kogalla Village Hotel, with a short walk through the main reception, or by using the main local access on the left side. There are some man-made hazards like buoys in the area, so keep an eye out. The water temperature is warm year-round, averaging around 27°C (81°F), so a wetsuit is not needed, but a rash guard is recommended for sun protection. The surf spot holds up even in medium cross-onshore conditions and can be inconsistent, not picking up as much swell as some nearby spots. There is also a short, powerful beachbreak right in the area, but it is punchy and brief. Marine life includes turtles and occasionally a white tip reef shark, so stay aware. The spot is less crowded than other well-known places like Midigama, and you are unlikely to find many beginners here.
