Overview
About this Spot
Zavial is a surf spot located in Algarve, Portugal. This surf spot features a wave direction that forms an a-frame, predominantly breaking on a mixed bottom of sand and rocks. It is best suited for intermediate surfers, as the conditions can be challenging. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and it can sometimes break, depending on the swell and tide. The ideal tide for surfing at Zavial is low to medium, and the spot is known for its world-class wave quality. Surfing at Zavial requires attention to the surf etiquette, especially during crowded conditions, as local surfers are present and may be protective of their waves. It is advisable to check the difficulty of the spot before entering the water to ensure that one’s skills are adequate for the conditions. The surf spot experiences rips and undertow, particularly when the waves are large, so caution is necessary. The wave can be quite sectiony and may close out often, especially during certain tidal conditions. The best surf conditions occur when there is a sizeable swell or a well-oriented swell direction. In the summer, strong thermal winds often blow offshore in the evening, making it essential to check conditions throughout the day. The wave can be fickle, working for only a short period on an incoming tide. At low tide, a wave breaks alongside the cliffs on the western end of the beach behind the point. Parking is available right at the beach entrance, but it is recommended not to leave valuables in the car during the busy summer months. Zavial is a popular beach among tourists, but given the right conditions, it can produce a great right-hand wave with a steep take-off that holds size. The local bodyboarders are familiar with the spot, so be prepared for competition for waves. The surf spot is easily accessible; from Vila de Bispo, take the road to Lagos and turn south to reach the beach. Nearby surf spots include Ingrina, Barranco, Salema, Martinhal, and Boca do Rio. Respect the locals.
