Overview
About this Spot
Lanuza is a surf spot located in Mindanao, Philippines, in the coastal municipality of Surigao del Sur. The area is known for its regular surf conditions, with a season that runs from November to March when the northeast monsoon brings consistent swells and offshore winds. The main surf breaks include Doot Poktoy, a right-hander at the Lanuza Rivermouth that can offer long, fast rides over a gravel sandbank, especially at low tide. Castor Reef, near Zone 4 and the elementary school, is a left that works best at high tide and needs a south wind to clean up the faces. The bottom is mostly coral reef, and the waves can reach up to 10 feet during peak swells. The spot is generally empty, and you might be the only one surfing, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Lanuza is accessible from Surigao City by van, with a ride from the airport costing about 190 piso. Motorcycles are available for exploring the coast. The area is budget-friendly, with homestays, guesthouses, and resorts offering simple lodging. The local community is welcoming, and the town hosts the annual Lanuza Surfing Festival every November. Other nearby surf spots include Badjang, Habag, 7 Rocks, and Joevees. The spot provides both left and right waves. Always check the surf forecast, report, and map before heading out, and use a webcam if available to see real-time conditions. The paddle to some breaks can be over 20 minutes, or you can use a boat. Urchins are present, and the reef can be sharp and shallow, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Respect the environment and the local rules.
