Overview
About this Spot
Pottuvil Point is a surf spot located in Southeast, Sri Lanka, about 6 kilometers north of Arugam Bay. The spot features a long right-hand point break that can offer rides between 50 and 150 meters, with some swells stretching even further. The wave starts near a rocky headland and then moves over a sandy bottom, breaking close to the beach. The best time to surf here is during the dry season from May to September, when the waves are most consistent. The spot works best with east, southeast, or south swells, a minimum swell height of 2 feet, and west or northwest winds. The tide is best at low to medium, as high tide usually does not work unless the swell is strong. The wave is fast in the mid section and can barrel, with sections that are good for nose rides. The spot is suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers, and you can use shortboards, mid-lengths, retro boards, or longboards. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The crowd is moderate, but it can get busy if the wind is onshore at Arugam Bay. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette before entering the water. To get to Pottuvil Point, you need to take a tuk-tuk from Arugam Bay or Pottuvil and then walk about 10 minutes to the point. The area is close to other surf spots like Whiskey Point, Arugam Beach, Elephant Rock, and Peanuts Farm. There is a lagoon to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east, and you might see wildlife like elephants and crocodiles nearby. Hide your gear well around the rocks, as theft can happen. The spot is less crowded than Arugam Bay and has a relaxed vibe.
