Overview
About this Spot
Okanda is a surf spot located in Southeast, Sri Lanka, near the small village of Okanda in the Ampara District. The spot is known for its rocky bottom and is considered a regional classic for surfing. The main break at Okanda is a right-hand point break with steep and fast waves, sometimes offering barreling sections. The surf here is best suited for intermediate surfers, and the waves can be technical and wild due to the exposed nature of the break. The length of the ride ranges from 50 to 150 meters. The surf at Okanda is not consistent and sometimes breaks, so it is important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out. The best time to surf is during the summer months, especially in August, with the best swell direction coming from the southwest. The area is usually empty, but when the spot gets crowded, always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette. The large rocks to the north of the bay offer some protection, creating a shallow sandy bay with more mellow waves, which can be fun for beginners, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. There are no lifeguards at Okanda, and the sea can be rough, so caution is advised. Access to Okanda is via a drive south from Arugam Bay, taking about two hours on winding dirt paths, and a 4×4 vehicle is recommended. The spot is close to other surf locations like Panama, Peanuts Farm, Elephant Rock, Arugam Bay, and Arugam Beach. Okanda is also near the entrance to Kumana National Park, known for its wildlife. The village is a sacred site with a Hindu shrine, Ukanthamalai Murugan Kovil. For more details, check the surf map and webcam for current conditions.
