Overview
About this Spot
El Huayco is a surf spot located in Lima, Peru, in the district of Punta Negra, about 56 kilometers south of downtown Lima. The spot is found by walking south from the settlement of Santa Rosa, past the point, and across a dry river bed. El Huayco sits between Santa Rosa and Peña Rosa. The surf spot features a rocky bottom with boulders and is known for working on all tides, but at low tide, the shore-break happens directly on rocks, so extra care is needed. The waves are usually lefts, but sometimes a short right can work. The spot is considered a regional classic and is most consistent when other point breaks in the area, like Arica and Explosivos, are not working due to lack of swell. The wave length is generally less than 50 meters. The best time to surf here is between December and March, during the summer months. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers and above, and the frequency of surfable waves is very consistent, but the quality can vary. Access to the water can be tricky because of the rocks and the presence of sea urchins, so watch your step when entering and exiting. The crowd is usually light, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Before paddling out, check your skills to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. El Huayco is often surfed when other nearby spots like Peña Rosa, Santa Rosa, Penascal, San Bartolo, and Izquierditas are not working. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check reliable sources before heading out. Always be aware of the spot’s difficulty and conditions to surf safely.
