Bird Island

Bird Island is a surf spot located in North Carolina, USA Southeast. The spot provides both left and right waves. Bird Island is an undeveloped barrier island situated at the southwestern edge of the North Carolina coast, between Sunset Beach and Little River Inlet in South Carolina. The surf spot features a sandy bottom and is suitable for surfers of all experience levels. It sometimes breaks and is known for its empty lineup. The only way to access this spot is by parking in Sunset Beach and walking down, or by boat from Little River Inlet. Bird Island encompasses about 1,481 acres, including 135 upland acres and over 1,300 acres of marsh, intertidal flats, and subtidal areas. The island offers various barrier island biotic communities and serves as a nesting site for loggerhead sea turtles. Public access is mainly via the ocean beach on the Sunset Beach side. Visitors can reach the island by driving to the intersection of 40th and Main Streets in Sunset Beach, where limited parking is available. A boardwalk provides access to the beach, and visitors can walk along the shoreline to reach the reserve. The island is home to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox, a unique feature that attracts visitors. As a protected area, Bird Island offers opportunities for outdoor recreation, but camping and campfires are not permitted. Nearby surf spots include Sunset Beach, Ocean Isle, Cherry Grove Pier, Holden Beach, and Captain’s Cove. When surfing here, it’s important to respect the locals and check the surf etiquette.
