About this Spot

Potholes is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. Known for its challenging conditions, Potholes offers both left and right waves, making it a versatile spot for surfers. The wave quality is considered a regional classic, and the spot is best suited for intermediate surfers due to its sometimes hollow and sucky nature. The bottom is a mix of coral reef and sand, which can make wipeouts a bit risky. The waves at Potholes can range in length from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is known for having a few surfers, so it’s not overly crowded. There are three main peaks at Potholes: one in the center of the beach which is a left, another at the most north point which doesn’t work well when the waves are bigger than 3 feet, and the most well-known peak at the south point which is a right. To get to Potholes, travel south of Ulladulla past Burrill Lake on the Princes Highway, and not far after you’ve left Burrill, you’ll see a dirt road. Take that road, and eventually, you’ll reach Potholes. It’s important to check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots and always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
