Overview
About this Spot
Takapuna is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on the North Shore. The spot features a long sandy beach with a rock reef at the north end and another reef at the southern end. The main beach break is best between the bottom of Ewen Street and Hauraki Road. The spot provides both left and right waves. Takapuna works mainly with a big northeast swell, usually when a north storm wind is blowing onshore. Offshore winds are rare when there is swell. The waves are generally short, with rides less than 50 meters. The north reef works at high tide and can offer hollow lefts, but the reef is shallow and close to a marker pole, so caution is needed. The south reef is at the far end of the beach and can have more power. The bottom is mostly sand, and the spot can be surfed at all tides. Takapuna is suitable for all levels, but the conditions can change quickly, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the forecast match your level. The spot is popular for surfing during onshore days, especially in storm surfs, and is also known for windsurfing in stormy conditions. Localism can be present, especially when the spot is crowded, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Pollution can be an issue, so check the latest water quality report before entering the water. The crowd is usually low, but it can get busy during good swells. The spot is a short walk from Takapuna town centre, with parking, toilets, and showers available. Nearby surf spots include O’Neills Reef, Mairangi Bay, Tamaki Reef, Browns Bay Bar, and Long Bay.
