Overview
About this Spot
Orewa Beach is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, about 20 minutes north of the city. The spot is a sandy beach break with a bottom of sand and is suitable for all levels of surfers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The best surf conditions are usually found with a northeast swell and west wind, and the waves can range from 1.5 to 6 feet. Orewa Beach is not the most consistent surf spot, but when the swell is bigger, it can offer long rides, especially when the waves break further out, so be ready for a long paddle. The spot sometimes breaks and is often empty, but it can get busier in summer, so always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. The best tides for surfing here are medium and high. The length of the ride is usually less than 50 meters. Parking is easy and available all along the beach, especially near the estuary mouth at the southern end. Facilities like toilets and showers are available at the Orewa Surf Life Saving Club further up the beach. The area is accessible by car via the Northern Motorway from Auckland City, taking the Orewa Beach or Hibiscus Coast exit at Silverdale, which is well signposted. Orewa Beach is a good option if the inner city surf is too small or if you are short on time or fuel to head further up the North East Coast. The Orewa River Mouth helps spread out the crowd when it gets busy. After your surf, the local coastal village offers food and drinks. Nearby surf spots include Red Beach, Long Bay, Browns Bay Bar, Mairangi Bay, and O’Neills Reef. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
