About this Spot

Pakiri is a surf spot located in Auckland, New Zealand, on a long stretch of sandy beach about 90 minutes north of Auckland city, near Wellsford. The spot is known for its sand bottom and shifting sand banks, which can create different surf conditions, from closeouts to good peaks. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Pakiri works on all tides and is suitable for all levels, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The beach is exposed to north and northeast swells, while it misses most east or southeast swells. Northwest wind is onshore. The beach is about 14 kilometers long, so there’s plenty of space when the surf is working. The waves are usually less than 50 meters in length. The water temperature averages around 17.5°C, with summer temps up to 20°C and winter dropping below 15°C, so a wetsuit is a good idea. There’s a carpark at the end of Pakiri Road, and a 4×4 can be useful for access. Facilities include a small parking area, toilets, and the Pakiri Holiday Park with accommodation and a shop. The area is surrounded by hills, sand dunes, and an estuary. Pakiri is generally uncrowded, but when it gets busy, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Localism can be present, so be mindful in the water. Always check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out to get the latest conditions. Near surf spots include Goat Island Reef, Daniels Reef, Forestry, Te Arai Point, and Omaha. Dogs are not allowed in the park or on the foreshore due to bird nesting. The spot is about a 1 hour 15 minute drive from Auckland, past Warkworth and near Goat Island. Always check the difficulty of the spot and conditions before surfing.
