About this Spot

Nelscott Reef is a surf spot located in Northwest, Oregon. It’s an ocean reef near Lincoln City that creates a reef break, known as the only place on the Oregon Coast with the right conditions for big wave surfing. The spot provides both left and right waves. Nelscott Reef has a coral reef and sand bottom, and works best on low and medium tides. It’s suitable for intermediate surfers and offers regular waves with lengths between 50 to 150 meters. The spot is known for its world-class quality and typically has few surfers in the lineup. Nelscott Reef is a heavy big wave spot, and paddling out is not recommended due to the massive shorebreak. A jetski and plenty of experience are necessary. The main peak is about 1/4 mile outside of the shorebreak, visible from the cliffs above the beach. The take-off is relatively mellow, and experienced surfers can get a long ride. The spot features beautiful scenery with fir trees lining the beach and kelp beds just inside the reef. It’s a deep spot, so there’s no need to worry about hitting the bottom, but the wave is powerful and demands respect. To access the spot, take a left off highway 101 onto 3rd avenue and follow it to the beach. Parking is available on the side of the road. Nearby surf spots include Lincoln City Canyon, Lincoln City, Roads End, Gleneden Beach State, and Boiler Bay. The Nelscott Reef Big Wave Classic, an annual surfing event, is held here. Remember to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Always respect the locals and follow surf etiquette when the spot is crowded.
