Overview
About this Spot
Surfside Beach is a surf spot located in Texas, USA Gulf of Mexico. The spot provides both left and right waves. Surfside Beach is situated on Follet’s Island near the city of Freeport. The surf spot features a sandy bottom and is suitable for all experience levels. The wave length is typically less than 50m, and the crowd is usually sparse with few surfers. Nearby surf spots include Surfside Jetty, Quintanas, Jamaica Beach, Galveston, and Galveston Pier. The proximity of deep water, about eight miles offshore, allows swells to reach the shore with minimal size loss. Long jetties help focus the swell and create cleaner surf conditions. The optimal surfing area is often found about half a mile north of the jetty, near Texas Street. Fall, winter, and spring typically offer the best surf conditions. Surfside Beach provides various amenities, including board rentals, lessons, beach house rentals, motels, and restaurants. Be aware of local regulations, such as the need for a beach driving pass and a 15 MPH speed limit. The spot can have rips and undertow, so always check the conditions and your skills before paddling out. When the waves are big, the spot can be challenging, but it’s enjoyable on a longboard when it’s thigh to waist high and clean. For bigger waves, consider checking out Matagorda. To get there, take Houston to 288 Lake Jackson/Freeport, then drive for about 50 minutes. Take 332 until you see the Surfside exit. At the light at the bottom of the bridge, turn right and go down about four streets, then left. You’ll likely see surfers hanging out. Find a parking spot, but avoid parking on the right side of the road to prevent towing. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Always check the surf forecast and report before your visit, and consider using surf maps and webcams to get a better idea of the conditions.
