About this Spot

Punta San Carlos is a surf spot located in Baja North, Mexico. This spot provides both left and right waves. The bottom is a mix of rocks and sand, and it works best at low and medium tides. The quality of the waves is considered normal, making it suitable for surfers of all levels. The waves here can range in length from 150 to 300 meters. Punta San Carlos is known for its series of right points with prevailing side/offshore winds, making it popular with windsurfers. There is a short shouldered left off a peak at the top of the point, which is powerful. The reefs at the top can be more consistent than the point itself during winter swells, offering both lefts and rights. The wave is not fast or very hollow but is fun and long, with some power when it gets bigger. There are also some reef breaks north of the point about 5 kilometers away, which offer lefts and rights but can blow out with northwest winds. The area is characterized by beautiful desert mesas dropping into the sea. The local fishermen are friendly and may be interested in trading lobster and crabs for old clothes, cigarettes, or alcohol. It’s important to bring warm clothes for them. The spot is not the best point break in Baja and is not the easiest to get to, but it’s worth the drive if you’re planning an extended stay. It’s never crowded, with plenty of room for everyone. To get there, take Mexico 1 past the turn-off to Punta Baja in El Rosario, go about 22 kilometers, and look for a dirt road turning off to the right. The roads can change with the rains, as does the quality, and it’s a 2-hour drive on a dirt road to reach the points. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended during the rainy season. There is a small fishing village at the base of the point. Remember to check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded and check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
