Overview
About this Spot
Kawazu is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in the coastal town of Kawazu on the eastern side of the Izu Peninsula, Shizuoka Prefecture. The spot is found right off the main road, and you will see it after coming out of a tunnel. The beach has dark sand and a mix of sand and rocks on the bottom. Pollution can be an issue, especially after rain when the river pushes out sand and debris, making the beach and water look dirty, though the water itself is generally clean. There are cement blocks out in the ocean, and when the surf gets big, the current can form an ‘A’ frame wave between these blocks. The spot sometimes breaks and is best at medium tide. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Surf conditions are generally mild, with waves often in the knee to thigh high range. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers, but it is important to check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Rips and undertow can be present, and there are man-made dangers like buoys and cement blocks, so stay aware of your surroundings. Localism can be an issue, especially when the spot gets crowded, with locals from Tadado and Shirahama often surfing here. Always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette when the spot is crowded. Parking can be tricky, so plan ahead. Nearby surf spots include Shirahama, Tadado Beach, Irita Hama, Ohama Beach, and Usami. For surf forecast, report, map, and webcam updates, check local resources before heading out. If you need gear or lessons, local surf shops like Soul Surf are available in the area. Always check the difficulty of the spot and current conditions before entering the water.
