About this Spot

Hanakago is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in Chiba Prefecture, near Wada Junior High School. The spot features a sandy bottom and is suitable for all levels of surfers. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. The waves here are hollow and break regularly, with the best conditions when the swell comes from the southeast or east and the wind is from the northwest or west. The water at Hanakago is clearer and cleaner than in northern Chiba or Shounan. The area is quiet, with few surfers during the week, but it can get crowded on weekends. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is busy, and check the surf etiquette when the lineup is crowded. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and the conditions match your level. There is a parking lot nearby that fits about 30 to 40 cars, and you will find showers, toilets, and a rest area close to the beach. Food and stores are limited in the area, so it is a good idea to bring your own supplies. The nearest surf shop, called Splash, is about a 10-minute walk north along Route 128 and also offers a few rooms for surfers to stay, but English is not widely spoken. The spot is about a two-hour drive from central Tokyo if you take the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line and follow the Futtsu-Tateyama Road to Tomiura, then head west. The closest train station is Minamihara on the JR Uchibo Line, about a 20-minute walk from the spot, but getting here by train is not recommended due to the long travel time and lack of local amenities. There are no car rentals nearby. For more details, check the surf forecast, report, map, and webcam before heading out. Nearby surf spots include Kamogawa, Mera, Katsuura, Hebara, and Jogashima.
